Project Team: Matthew Hintze Architecture, Mattson/Client, & Dave Petersen/Landscaper â€‹

As part of a 1970's modern house renovation, this project focuses on the integration of architecture and garden through orderly poetic frames.

Currently in construction, inspiration is derived from a combination of the Uinta Mountains, and modern French and Japanese garden elements.  The garden concept comes from its' namesake poem by T. S. Eliot which in simplest form is an allegory on life - turning poignant themes from the poem into representative garden scenery, it speaks to the nature of time and human existence.

Each garden scene unfolds through architectural frames and its design is further refined by perspective and collaboration with the Architect. Through grading privacy is emphasized while forested meadow, sun and shade, and collections plantings support different microclimates. Enclosure of the garden creates for a variety of bold and emotive experiences while interacting with each wing of the house. As we move into boulder placement, detailed project management ensures the design is within budget and continually refines approaches to construction and local materials. Consultation with local professional gardeners ensured the plant palette and garden maintenance will thrive within the changing climatic conditions of the area, and that the aesthetic vision of the garden can be nurtured long-term. Construction will be completed Fall of 2026.
